Construction - Classics

"The modern mahogany runabout has many advantages over its original counterpart that greatly reduce the cost of ownership and maintenance requirements. In the past one would typically have had a boathouse in which to store your boat and a boatman tending to it.

Today we are able to make use of modern epoxies and boat building techniques which produce a strong watertight hull that requires little or no maintenance. Our classic reproductions are built by the WEST system cold moulded technique. The hull is built on solid Mahogany frames and timbers to which strips of horizontally opposed epoxy coated marine ply are glued. A final layer of Mahogany planking is applied on the sides which gives the hull its traditional appearance. The completed hull is covered in and protective fibreglass cloth set in epoxy, this provides additional durability and provides a deep finish which would traditionally only be en achieved by at least 15 layers of varnish.

A final LPU Polyurethane clear coating is applied to provide UV protection and to give the hull its final beauty and a high gloss. The use of a two part LPU coating as apposed to a traditional varnish means that recoating the hull should not be required for many years. This type of hull construction is technically as durable and as low maintenance as any GRP hull.
